The name of the company comes from the Hawaiian word "da kine" (derived from "the kind" or "the best"). Rob Kaplan began manufacturing the DaKine Leash in Haiku, Maui , Hawaii in 1979. The DaKine surf leash was designed to withstand the rigorous Hawaiian conditions and began gaining international popularity soon after its development. By 1980, professional windsurfers asked Kaplan to help build foot straps for their new wave boards. Soon after, DaKine began developing other sports equipment. In 1986, the sports company opened its first office in North America, along with a manufacturing facility and warehouse. All of these were strategically placed in Hood River, Oregon, a town chosen for its close proximity to the base of Mount Hood, a location where ski and snowboard camps attracted various athletes throughout the year. During the 1990’s, DaKine entered the winter glove business when they developed three new glove models. The company also introduced the Heli Pack, a daypack designed specifically for backcountry skiing and snowboarding. DaKine was acquired by the Australian sports company Billabong in 2008. Currently the company carries surf, skate, snowboard, ski, windsurf, kite, and bike accessories and equipment. Read up more about the company here. |
